Assistant Director – Surgical Services – General Surgery- Orlando
Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire an Assistant Director – Surgical Services who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.
Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.
Our expanding unit performs over 17,000 procedures a year offering challenging and rewarding work in orthopedics/podiatry, general/GYN, plastics, urology, ENT, dental and more. We possess an extensive minimally invasive program in several specialties using the latest laparoscopic treatment technologies. Currently we have four robots which are used daily for GYN oncology, urology, ENT and general surgeries. Pediatric surgery has expanded to four fully integrated suites that were specially designed to produce optimal outcomes for our pediatric population. We perform heart, lung, liver, kidney (cadaveric or living donor) and kidney/pancreas transplants as part of our very busy transplant program. An OR internship training program, department in-service education programs and a professional practice advancement ladder are offered as well.
The Assistant Director, under administrative guidance, has the overall responsibility for directing activities in the unit and for supervising the direct and indirect nursing care for specific age groups dependent on the unit standard of care. Assists the Director/AVP with the responsibility of environmental control, staffing needs, assistance to physicians and assignment of staff duties. Assists the Nurse Manager, ANM, or unit educator with the orientation, training and education of new personnel and ongoing staff development. Works with the Finance Team with unit budget/cost containment and labor tracking. Assists in the development, implementation and tracking of unit based key Performance Indicators and P.I. Program. Adheres and assures that staff adhere to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Current registration with Florida State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse
National specialty certification (Preferred)

Coordinates the continuity of nursing care provided and takes the initiative to ensure appropriates staffing levels and quality of care will be provided. Demonstrates leadership ability, accepts responsibility, exercises authority and functions independently using effective written and verbal communication. Collaborates with other departments and disciplines to provide continuity of patient care and promote teamwork.
Investigates complaints and/or non-compliance of polices. Follows up with staff and physicians in appropriate time frames.
Assists and assumes responsibility for department budget and is proactive with cost containment. Assists and abides by the yearly unit budget planning and labor tracking guidelines. Oversees and utilizes labor tracking standard to ensure that the unit staffing assignments are done efficiently according to the schedule/patient caseload. Develops unit-staffing plans, reviewing on an ongoing basis.
Utilizes patient and employee satisfaction survey information in the development of unit activities. Rounds with intention on the unit and establishes customer satisfaction activities on the unit. Oversees unit dashboards and creates action plans to support improvement. Evaluates personnel turnover and recommends appropriate retention strategies. Develops Christian Service and satisfaction plans annually. Involves staff in achieving unit goals. Shares data with staff. Supports the customer and employee satisfaction activities of the organization.
Participates in the development and implementation of department goals, objectives and unit performance improvement process. Able to identify individualized plan of care through the use of APIE. Oversees unit dashboards and creates action plans to support improvement. Assists in establishing and revising procedures, policies, standards, techniques and nursing competency based on findings from unit performance improvement initiatives and unit rounds.
Oversees unit personnel performance evaluations within the specified deadlines, and recommend personnel actions concerning promotion wage increase suspension and disciplinary action. Recognizes staff needs for additional skills and recommends pertinent education. Reviews and revises unit job descriptions of personnel under the Director at least annually.
Promotes a safe environment: Supervises and initiates appropriate action in emergency situations, demonstrates awareness and control of hazards which may endanger patients, visitors and employees, identifies environmental concerns by conducting routine unit rounds, communicating necessary precautions for the safe environment. Ensures adherence to appropriate regulatory standards and Florida Hospital policy procedure.
Maintains professional competency by participating in continuing education and appropriate learning experiences both internal and external. Attends pertinent conferences and seminars regarding clinical nursing, business, or management. Provides patient care as needed.
