The Inpatient Pharmacy at Florida Hospital provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care including total parenteral nutrition services, pharmacokinetic consultative services and various other services designed to provide the highest level of care for our patients. Our pharmacy utilizes state of the art automation to assist our team with distributive functions while providing a clinical environment conducive to direct patient care and innovative pharmacy practice.

The pharmacy technician performs a wide range of supportive duties to assist the pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medications so that patients will receive care consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the Retail Pharmacy and Florida Hospital Administration. Technician will perform all required duties/tasks necessary to provide for the effective daily operations of all department services and programs. Technician should be able to handle a high volume of work with minimal direct supervision and perform all level I and II job functions. Technician should actively participate in outstanding customer service and accept responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
High School graduate or G.E.D. certification. (Preferred)
Retail Pharmacy experience, at least 2-3 years (Preferred)
Experience with obtaining payment of prescriptions from insurance companies (Preferred)
Competent in medical terminology, medication names and medication uses (Preferred)
Proficient with prescription-filling software and other computer skills (Preferred)
Ability to work under pressure (Preferred)
Ability to interact professionally with public and other medical staff (Preferred)
Knowledge of compounding oral/topical medications (Preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Must be registered with The Florida Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern
Technician certification (PTCB) or ability to obtain within two years (Preferred)

Prescription processing: follow a systematic procedure for assisting with the flow of prescriptions through the pharmacy. Fill in patient information on all prescriptions. Obtain insurance information from patient, and keep patient abreast of any insurance problems. Maintain current patient information in computer. Assure that patient has signed HIPAA release. Keep pharmacist aware of patient status and need for prescription check. Assure orders are processed, dispensed and delivered accurately and promptly. Always obtain pharmacists' verification before distribution of any medication.
Prescription preparation: follows strict guidelines in preparing and dispensing medications under the immediate supervision of the pharmacist. Assist the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medication accurately and efficiently. Prepare various compounds using aseptic technique under the immediate supervision of the pharmacist. Prepare and label prescriptions for the pharmacist before dispensing. Obtain controlled substances for prescription filling under the immediate supervision of pharmacist. Double-count schedule II controlled substances before dispensing. Place all dispensing materials for pharmacist final verification (i.e. stock container, original prescription(s), labeling, etc.). Demonstrate knowledge of the generic names of medications, medication uses, and a good understanding of mathematical principles.
Communication: communicate with patients and other pharmacies regarding prescription transfers or clarification. Answer phone calls and determine nature of request. Respond to requests to determine if there are refills. Respond to needs of patients, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners regarding status of prescriptions and deliveries.
Inventory management: maintain adequate current stock of medications. Maintain accuracy in inventory control including, but not limited to computer. Coordinate receiving, record keeping, stocking drugs and checking for shorts, discrepancies and outdated merchandise. Monitor inventory system to insure proper storage conditions for all pharmacy items. Check products for expiration date at least every month and before dispensing. Call hospital pharmacy to obtain needed drugs/supplies as requested by pharmacist. Respond to needs of patient, physician, nursing stations, and/or community pharmacists regarding special order or borrowing needs as requested by pharmacist. Adjust inventory stock levels and orders drugs in appropriate amount to replenish stock. Never run out of fast movers (top 50). Assure medications not ordered through EDI are entered into inventory.
Expense management: perform all activities involved in the management of pharmaceutical expenses by reviewing and comparing generic costs. Seek additional vendors for hard to obtain pharmaceuticals whenever necessary. Identify changes in drug movement patterns to Manager or Pharmacy Director as needed to address issues that may impact pharmacy budget.
Organization and efficiency of pharmacy: contribute to the organization and efficient operation of the pharmacy. Organize assigned work area by keeping it well stocked with necessary items, and keeping it in an orderly fashion. Contribute potential ideas to improve patient care and department organization. Plan and manage time in order to complete work assignments within a scheduled time frame, so that assistance may be given to other team members when needed or as directed. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively under pressure and stress. Carry out special assignments as assigned by the pharmacist. Assist in the training of new pharmacy staff members, residents, and students. Answer physician and staff questions as able or refer to the pharmacist. Demonstrates the ability to use the pharmacy computer./li>
Professional development: remain current in all retail business and other necessary policies and procedures to insure consistent quality of knowledge and performance. Attend monthly staff meetings. Read memos and posted changes. Participate in hospital or department in-service programs or continuing education programs as requested by supervisor.
Disaster plan involvement: understand disaster plan according to department policy. Participate in Disaster operations by coming to the retail store when requested. Facilitate the smooth and efficient operation of the department by being available and prepared to work during scheduled working hours in order to meet approved staffing levels.
