The Pediatric Public Health Initiative seeks a research assistant for a one-year study of nutrition programs in Flint, MI. The study, led by Dr. Amy Saxe-Custack, will expand and evaluate a fruit and vegetable prescription program for pediatric patients and a cooking and nutrition education class for children. These programs are designed to improve access to and affordability of fresh foods.
Under the general supervision of the Pediatric Public Health Initiative Nutrition Director the research assistant will support all aspects of implementing the research study, with the specific duties dependent on the phase of the study. Activities supported by the research assistant include: maintenance of study documentation, recruitment and tracking of study participants, collection and entry of data, facilitation of cooking and nutrition education classes for children, and coordination with study participants and staff.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Recruit, consent, and track study participants • Coordinate timing of all research assessments and ensure completion • Collect data from the electronic health records • Perform dietary data collection with children • Coordinate scheduling and attendance at cooking and nutrition classes • Facilitate after-school cooking and nutrition education classes for children • Attend weekly research meetings • Other duties as needed for study completion
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in nutrition, public health, or a health-related field employment or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public health nutrition or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.
Experience with collection, management, and analysis of dietary data; Able to work independently in an organized and efficient manner; Excellent oral and written skills with the ability to write and conduct daily communications; Basic knowledge of web-based communication, competent keyboarding, high level of comfort with development of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations; Basic proficiency in the following software: Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Office PowerPoint; Ability and willingness to travel within Flint; Valid US driver's license; RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist); Master’s degree in nutrition, public health, or health-related field; Experience working with underserved families from culturally and economically diverse populations.
