Oversees the provision of highly specialized and technologically complex respiratory care services to the patients served by the Sinai Health System. Develops clinical practice standards for the practice of respiratory care by incorporating evidence-based medicine.
Manages utilization of respiratory care services to ensure that care is provided in a cost-effective manner and that over-utilization and under-utilization of services are identified and corrected through the institutional Process Improvement program.
Enhances job satisfaction, recruitment and retention by educating nursing and respiratory care staff members. Provides clinical instruction to respiratory care students so that the Sinai Health System can continue to effectively recruit qualified caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Educates patients and their families, physicians, and other health care workers in proper respiratory care procedures and clinical practices that sustain and promote respiratory health.
Develops clinical protocols for the effective utilization management of respiratory care services in cooperation with the Medical Staff. Incorporates clinical practice guidelines and relevant scientific literature into departmental clinical practice. Oversees the implementation of respiratory care clinical pathways.
Provides direct clinical services to patients throughout all clinical areas
Directly supervises the orientation of new employees to the clinical areas of the department and monitors compliance with standards. Provides continuing education and staff development.
Develops clinical competencies for respiratory care personnel and assesses staff competence. Assists with the clinical evaluation of staff members as part of the performance evaluation process.
Directly responsible for the clinical rotations of respiratory care students. Directly supervises and mentors respiratory care students employed by the department.
Participates in policy and procedure manual review and quality assurance.
Maintains an environment that will stimulate and motivate employees to perform at their highest level.
Coordinates the provision of respiratory care services including staffing, supplies, and equipment rentals in a cost-effective manner.
Evaluates new equipment in conjunction with the Clinical Manager and Director.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of clinical respiratory care procedures for Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, Medical Intensive Care, Surgical Intensive Care, Emergency Care, Trauma Care, and acute respiratory care. Demonstrates knowledge of proper blood gas laboratory techniques.
Associates Degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.
Bachelors Degree is preferred.
MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE:
Knowledge of advanced clinical practices is required.
Demonstrated teaching skills are required.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the NBRC.
Must be licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).
BLS (CPR) and NRP certifications are required.
ACLS and PALS certifications are preferred.
Must become certified as a Neonatal-Pediatric Respiratory Care Specialist within one year of employment.
