Doctoral Degree (Foreign equivalent or higher degree) or foreign equivalent in Materials Science or related discipline in hand in September 1, 2019.
PhD in Materials Science with experience in powder processing and materials characterization in hand in September 1, 2019 . Manuscripts published, or in preparation for publication, in peer-reviewed journals on experimental materials science or related areas.
Brief Description of Duties:
The postdoctoral positions will focus on fundamental research related to alloy and composite synthesis using powder processing techniques, structural characterization and thermal analysis and high temperature mechanical testing. At a high-level, the postdoctoral fellows will carry out fundamental modeling of sintering, both from a materials science and practical application standpoint, and translate this modeling into processing, characterization, and testing for component-level designs.
Specific scientific duties and responsibilities include:
Construction or application of Ashby maps to determine practical routes for sintering of both metallic and ceramic components. Materials of interest include tungsten and its alloys, copper alloys, functionally graded metallic systems composed of these materials, nano-SiC with hard-shell inclusions, beryllium carbide, two phase mixtures of beryllium caride and SiC and boron carbide composites.
Powder process development and sintering of bulk materials using techniques that include but not limited to high energy ball milling, hot consolidation and spark plasma synthesis.
Detailed microstructural examination of candidate materials.Evaluation including x-ray tomography, scanning, transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy, benchtop and synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and other synchrotron techniques as needed.
Thermal and mechanical testing of powders and bulk materials. Techniques will include differential scanning calorimetry/differential thermal analysis, laser flash analysis,dilatometry, uniaxial tensile/compression testing and nanoindentation.
Management of standard operating procedures for the processing laboratory that utilizes hazardous materials such as nano-powders and beryllium. Management duties will also include effective oversight of research conducted in laboratory spaces.
Interpretation of data and effective communication in scientific literature.
Writing and management of laboratory user proposals.
Other duties as assigned.
