Position performs receptionist and clerical duties for assigned nursing units under the supervision of the Charge Nurse, Nurse Manager/Director. Responsible for completing established competencies for the position within designated orientation timeframe.
1.Acts as a focus of communication in the Nursing Station regarding patient care activities and locations. Provides information of same.
2.Receives, greets and directs physicians, patients, visitors and hospital personnel arriving to or calling the Nursing Unit.
3.Receives requests from physicians, patients and families and refers requests to appropriate Nursing staff.
4.Receives requests from physicians, patients, visitors and families and refers requests to appropriate Nursing staff.
5.Observes Hospital and Unit policy in assisting and directing patients and families and refers requests to appropriate Nursing staff.
6.Answers telephone in a courteous and helpful manner.
7.Calls physicians as directed.
8.Calls ancillary departments as directed.
9.Immediately answers call lights at the desk and communicates patient requests to appropriate Nursing Staff.
10.Maintains a clean, safe and functional working environment.
11.Maintains adequate quantity of forms, materials, supplies and equipment inventory on assigned unit.
12.Maintains assignment and bulletin board and other communication media.
PATIENT RECORD/CHART ACTIVITY
13.Ensures confidentiality of patients' medical records.
14.Initiates, assembles and maintains charts for all assigned patients.
15.Transcribes physicians' orders; initiates all necessary forms, requisitions and communications necessary to implement orders.
16.Enters data into computer.
17.Graphs temperature, pulse and respiration as directed.
18.Initiates and maintains patient Kardex and information contained in same.
19.Files diagnostic and laboratory reports in appropriate, functional order as prescribed by hospital and Unit policy.
20.Monitors location of charts at all times and prepares the transfer of medical records upon discharge or expiration of the patient.
21.Assists with patient's transfer by assembling chart to accompany patient.
22.Assists with preparation of chart for patients going to surgery by checking charts fort completeness.
23.Performs all other duties as assigned.
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred, Medical Terminology
Preferred: Recent acute care experience as a unit secretary.
