Research Assistant - Georgetown University Medical Center
This Research Assistant position is part of a basic science laboratory focusing on pediatric cancers. The overall goal of the research team is to discover and develop new therapies for children with cancer. Most experiments include molecular biology and cellular biology techniques. In vivo cancer models are also utilized.
The Research Assistant works under direct supervision of the principal investigator of the laboratory and in very close coordination with other members of the research team, which includes, undergraduate students, graduate students, other research assistants and postdoctoral fellows. Duties include but are not limited to:
Prepare common buffers
Cell culture, Western blot, PCR, qPCR
Cell viability and motility assays
Compile and analyze research data using Excel, Prizm, InStat, MATLAB, and other advanced software programs.
Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
Small animal handling, maintenance, minor surgery
Writing IACUC protocols
Next generation sequence analysis
Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation, and ordering supplies
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, and/or related field (Masters preferred) and experience in laboratory research. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Able to perform research in a laboratory setting working with independence for all routine procedures and lead certain research activities and perform various advanced procedures
Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint and assisting in the preparation of technical procedures and reports are important
Highly proficient in performing the above listed skills, requiring little training
Maintain good record keeping and show ability to learn new techniques
Training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation
Experience with small animal cancer models
