The Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine is seeking a Nurse Practitioner in the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health care team and is responsible for providing comprehensive care to critically ill children. The NP practices within the guidelines of the institution and accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Maryland Nurse Practice Act. The Nurse Practitioner is granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Medical Board.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Conducts comprehensive and/or episodic health assessments of patients with acute and chronic pain. Records and documents assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate, and/or expedite required services. This will include:
Perform history and physical exams, discriminating between normal and abnormal findings; and identify differential diagnosis.
Establishes a Plan of Care including:
Order appropriate lab, radiographic and other studies and interpret results
Performs tests and procedures as indicated within scope of practice
Establish a plan of care related to identified problems, including medication and therapeutic procedures.
Consult with other team members regarding proposed treatment guidelines as necessary
Implements Plan of Care in safe and effective manner. This will include:
Prescribe and regulate medications and performs other related procedures per Nurse Practitioner-Physician written agreement
Record patient visit/interaction in concise clear logical and timely manner
Arrange referrals to appropriate specialties when needed
Triage patient telephone calls, messages, and interactions appropriately
Tracks patient compliance with treatment plan
Organizes workload to meet patient and organizational needs including:
Utilize time management to see patients in an efficient manner as identified by departmental goals
Maintain consistent level of productivity. Identifies problems that impede overall functioning and initiates appropriate interventions
Work collaboratively with the health team members to facilitate smooth operations of the unit
Communicates with healthcare team members to assure patient and organizational needs are met. This will include:
Identify areas of weakness in operational systems and makes recommendations for improvements
Communicate significant information in an organized, logical, and concise manner to co-workers
Provide constructive feedback as it relates to performance in an appropriate manner
Adheres to the confidentiality policy as outlined in the interdisciplinary Clinical Practice Manual
Make recommendations to Administrative leadership related to Clinic administrative operations
Participates with departmental research initiatives including:
Work with faculty to develop and/or implement clinical research studies
May work as a liaison with IRB, NIH, Pharmaceutical Companies to implement and facilitate clinical research functions
Enroll/consent patients in study protocols and facilitate administrative functions.
May be involved in data analysis
Prioritize and organize work to meet the changing priorities of the functional unit.
Coordinate scheduling, order appropriate tests, evaluate results, record data, perform patient evaluations and participate in care of patients on specific protocols regarding specific disease entities and treatment.
Prescribe medication including oral, parental, intramuscular or subcutaneous drugs; prescribes Schedule 2, 2n, 3, 3n, 4, 5 Drugs under the guidelines of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act and the DEA.
Provide guidance and direction to other unit staff where applicable.
Act as preceptor/mentor for Advanced Practice Nursing candidates in collaboration with the respective University professors.
Coordinates and assists in the process of conducting yearly performance reviews- distributes work and ensures equitable distribution of workload.
Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
JHU Equivalency: Additional experience may substitute for master's degree.
Preferred Qualifications: Some prior experience in chronic or acute pain service. Three years of pediatric acute or critical care nursing experience. Completion of an accredited NP program in the area of Pediatrics.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding the pathophysiology, manifestations and therapy of the common diseases for which children are admitted to an intensive care unit.
Advanced clinical skills in specialty area such as lumbar puncture, arterial line insertion, central line placement, and airway management.
Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members.
Uses advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive assessment of patients/families.
Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patient medical concerns and to develop and implement plans of action for management.
Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communication effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel including participation in rounds and consultations.
Ability to develop expertise and expand knowledge in specific clinical areas and share that knowledge and expertise with colleagues as a team member caring for patients.
Maintain classifications by attending appropriate continuing education classes or enrolling in formal credit classes as required by state and national accrediting institutions
Requires positioning, assisting, and/or providing emergency restraining of aggressive patients and patients experiencing loss of control
Possible exposure to communicable disease, hazardous material, aggressive patients, pharmacological agents.
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
