Works under the direction and supervision of a registered licensed Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant to aid in the total rehabilitation of patients of all ages by conducting non-professional aspects of treatment. Assists therapists in limited patient treatment activity as noted in the Physical and Occupational Therapy Practice Acts and performs supportive duties to ensure efficient provision of therapy services.
Reports directly to the Supervisor of Rehabilitation.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Demonstrated ability to comprehend, speak, and write the English language.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Health facility aide experience and/or training preferred.
Requires at least two months on the job to become familiar with treatment techniques, modalities, basic anatomy, and disease processes.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Required to perform medium daily work with sporadic heavy lifting, as this is a direct patient care position. Must be able to climb (especially stairs and ramps) and guard/assist patients while climbing stairs/ramps. Other physical abilities that are imperative include: balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, talking, and hearing. Must have good depth perception to adequately perform the described.
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors, in patient's rooms and therapy gyms. Must be able to work with electrical equipment such as kitchen appliances and splinting/casting equipment, modality equipment, etc. May be exposed to environmental hazards, infectious diseases, and chemical agents (see MSDS); sharp objects; fluctuating noise levels; disagreeable odors; frequent interruptions; and agitated or emotionally distraught patients and families.

GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER: (GMC), located Danville, Pa., the largest tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital in the region, is licensed for 475 beds, including 89 pediatric beds in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. GMC, a Magnet Hospital, maintains the region’s only Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with additional qualifications in pediatrics.
