This position provides senior staff level legal advice to corporate entities affiliated with the Cook Children's Health Care System ("System"), which is an integrated pediatric health care delivery system that includes a licensed acute care hospital, a fund raising and endowment foundation, a management company, an integrated physician non-profit health care corporation, health maintenance organization, home health company, and captive insurance company, two (2) physician/hospital JV ASC, a company providing services to children with complex developmental and behavioral disabilities and aircraft holding company and for-profit ancillary services company. Staff Attorney reports to the Chief Legal Officer who is responsible for the overall Legal Services provided for the System including hospital and physician operations for the System. The primary responsibilities of Staff Attorney, as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer and/or his/her designee(s) (Associate General Counsel(s) and Assistant General Counsel(s)), are to provide independent legal advice directly to System entities and assist the Chief Legal Officer with the management of all legal services rendered to and legal costs incurred in connection with hospital and physician operations. Staff Attorney may be assigned to provide legal advice or manage legal services to the System entities on a variety of matters, including federal and state regulatory compliance, medical staff, credentialing, patient consents, patient terminations, Ethics Committee, risk management, human research and Institutional Review Board ("IRB") matters and patient care. Staff Attorney shall be responsible for call coverage on patient issues and responses to subpoenas, medical records releases, drafting and/or reviewing contracts pertaining to general corporate, health care delivery, health care financing, and resident and educational affiliations. In addition, Staff Attorney may review certain corporate agreements and board and committee minutes as well as business practices and policies of System entities to monitor compliance with tax, regulatory, and System requirements and provide advice to Cook officers, managers, and line employees. Staff Attorney shall also serve as legal advisors to various committees and project teams of Cook entities as assigned. Staff Attorney shall support and have direct impact upon key System strategies and initiatives.
Staff Attorney shall report directly to the Chief Legal Officer and provides support to the positions of Chief Legal Officer, Associate General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel employed in the Legal Department.
Staff Attorney must have a bachelor's degree
A law degree
A minimum of three (3) years legal and managerial experience in increasingly responsible positions with a law firm or corporate or governmental/quasi-governmental legal department dealing with both for-profit and non-profit organizations and the healthcare industry.
