Department Description The MIND Institute is a research and clinical center whose mission involves awareness, understanding, prevention, and treatment of the challenges associated with neurodevelopmental disabilities. It is a matrix organization and encompasses over 250 faculty and staff from 14 academic departments/schools with an annual operating budget of approximately $3.3 million, grant and contract awards totaling approximately $1 million, and gifts and endowments valued at approximately $14 million. The MIND Institute also houses 4 federally funded Center grants: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Autism Center of Excellence, and Center for Children's Environmental Health; and 3 federally funded training grants: Autism Research Training Program, Developmental Behavioral Pediatric Fellowship, and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities. THIS IS NOT AN H1- B OPPORTUNITY Responsibilities Autism BrainNet, funded by the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI), is a collaborative network of academic sites that collects, stores and distributes post-mortem brain tissue for autism research. This resource is intended to support the highest-quality and most rigorous research into the underlying genetic and neuropathological mechanisms that contribute to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental conditions. As part of the Autism BrainNet team, the Staff Research Associate provides technical, scientific, and organizational assistance in the day-to-day tissue processing, histology, and tissue distribution operations of Autism BrainNet at the UC Davis MIND Institute Primary duties include brain tissue processing and lab safety and compliance maintenance. The Staff Research Associate works closely with the Autism BrainNet team, including Dr. David G. Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in neurobiology or a related field with a minimum of 2 years experience in conducting research studies in a neuroscience-related discipline (e.g., undergraduate thesis)
Minimum of 2 years experience in histology laboratory with demonstrated basic histology lab skills. (e.g., pipetting, sectioning and staining tissue)
Demonstrated experience or working knowledge with human or animal brain tissue
Facility with computer programs such as MS Word, Excel and Adobe Photoshop
Ability to maintain excellent and accurate records
Ability to work as part of a team
Ability to independently and effectively identify resources to solve problems
Excellent organization skills, ability to focus and work with multiple interruptions
