Childrenâs Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), in partnership with University of Southern California (USC) and the Keck School of Medicine of USC, seeks to recruit a Division Chief for Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. The Division Chief will provide overall leadership to the division, overseeing strategic planning, recruitment and program development, and ensuring the integration of training and research programs with clinical services throughout the hospital. The Division Chief will lead the divisionâs support of the Department of Pediatricsâ academic goals in research, education and faculty development and will join the Department of Pediatrics Leadership team.
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at CHLA is ranked #4 nationally as a subspecialty in Pediatrics and ranked # 1 on the west coast by the U.S. News & World Report. The Division currently has 12 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members, 6 fellows, and 3 clinical nurse practitioners.Â We currently follow ~1900 children with diabetes and ~4000 others with various other endocrine disorders at our main campus and five satellite offices (yielding ~19,000 outpatient visits in 2018).Â We offer specialized clinical and research programs in type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, obesity, Prader-Willi syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Turner syndrome, thyroid cancer, neuro-endocrinology, and bone and mineral disease. CHLA also has a dedicated multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary Diabetes and Obesity (D&O) Program that compliments the Divisionâs overall mission.
Candidate Desired Traits and Characteristics
Childrenâs Hospital Los Angeles desires to recruit an accomplished physician-leader with strong leadership skills to serve as the Division Chief for Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. The Chief will oversee the divisionâs clinical, research and education programs, service missions, staff, and budgetary affairs. The Division Chief will provide the overall direction for research, recruitment, and new program development, and will ensure compliance with all governmental and CHLA policies. The Division Chief should have strong interpersonal skills, be able to effectively communicate a vision, and have demonstrated leadership capabilities in previous academic appointments.
The Division Chief must be a persuasive advocate for the Department of Pediatrics of USC and CHLA, able to articulate goals, inspire progress, and respond nimbly to change. Working with CHLA and CHLA Foundation leadership, the Division Chief will be an active partner in the fundraising campaign to support and endow programs.
The successful candidate must share and demonstrate a personal commitment to CHLAâs values of respect, excellence, service, knowledge, and teamwork, which are also values shared by the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Candidates should be at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
Career path leading to this position
Candidates should have strong clinical, research, and leadership/management experience in a childrenâs hospital or academic pediatric department affiliated with a university medical school, with an increasing scope of responsibility including faculty and trainee mentoring and program development.
Candidates must have an MD, DO or MD/PhD degree, have completed an accredited Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship, and must be board-certified in Pediatric Endocrinology. Candidates should qualify for appointment as Associate Professor or Full Professor.
