The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.
Under general supervision, the Patient Account Representative is responsible for the handling of incoming calls and inquires related to patient accounts, responding to written correspondence, contacting patients and responsible parties to assist with the resolution of outstanding patient account balance. In addition, a variety of tasks relating to claims processing; contacts patients and responsible parties to resolve patient account balances ; investigates account status and initiates the collection process.
Answers calls arriving through call system in a timely and professional manner
Identifies problem accounts with payors; investigates and corrects errors, follows-up on missing account information, and resolves past-due accounts
Contacts responsible party to resolve outstanding patient account balances
Establishes requested payment plans and monitors adherence to plans by responsible party
Utilizes hospital billing system, payor websites and system interfaces to manage accounts in a timely and effective manner
Sends correspondence to patient
Provides resources and information to patients and callers
Initiates applications for Financial Assistance as requested by patients
Directs accounts to outside collection agencies using establish procedure when appropriate
Contacts appropriate SCCA Departments to obtain necessary information to manage accounts
Prepares reports to identify and resolve accounts receivable and referral problems
Performs other related duties as assigned
High School diploma or equivalent
A minimum of one year customer service experience in a business setting
Ability to communicate verbally, in person, on the telephone and in writing in a clear and concise manner
Strong listening skills
Ability to apply critical thinking and good judgment when resolving patient complaints/issues
Knowledge of medical terminology
Interpersonal/human relations skills
Ability to respond to questions in a tactful and professional manner
Ability to make basic numerical calculations
Ability to follow established processes and procedures
Ability to maintain accuracy and pay attention to details
Ability to interpret accounts and related documentation
Ability to troubleshoot and thoroughly review account information

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance was incorporated in 1998 as a separate, jointly governed non-profit that included the cancer programs of three partners. Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is a cancer treatment center that unites doctors from Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, University of Washington Medical Center, and Seattle Children’s. The purpose of this organization is to provide state-of the-art patient and family centered care; support the conduct of cancer clinical research and education; enhance access to improved cancer interventions; and advance the standard of cancer care regionally and beyond. The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Northwest, and according to the National Cancer Data Base, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance patients in general have better survival rates than patients treated at other cancer treatment centers.
