Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include:
Collects patient, physician and test order information in order to create patient accounts. This includes verifying patient identification, insurance information, physician credentials and test order requirements.
Blood specimen collection via venipuncture or capillary puncture for all age groups
Receives, and processes patient specimens which includes separating specimens by centrifugation prior to testing. May include transporting.
Aliquots different sample types, if needed, and either loads preanalytical instruments, which include automated stainers, or delivers them to the testing department
Performs various support activities to facilitate operation of assigned department or work area, which include answering the telephone, clerical and receptionist duties (i.e., faxing, phones, pneumatic tube system, reports).
Provides resolution to customer service issues using the service recovery model.
Supports and helps in education to new and existing clinical staff. This includes mentoring students from affiliated schools or programs.
Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements of laboratory testing for all age groups, from neo-nates through geriatric patients.
Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Employee job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
Performs all departmental functions and has a thorough knowledge of hospital and Laboratory Information Systems to include downtime procedures, specimen processing, batching and transporting, billing, reference testing and scheduling.
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department or unit.

Able to effectively communicate verbally and in written form in English with patients, staff, and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner
Acts as a consultant for the lab relaying testing information related to test orders, sample types, container types, quantity needed, and result turnaround times
Represents the laboratory in troubleshooting general clinical inquiries into appropriate sample type, order options, or modifications to test orders
Able to communicate with care providers when unacceptable sample submitted for testing and ensures follow-up investigation for any missing or incorrectly routed sample
Communicates with healthcare staff when specimens are not suitable for testing, cancels, and reorders test in the Laboratory Information System
Ability to read text and numbers in English, with demonstrated ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve, and exercise judgment under supervision
Knowledge of human anatomy
Excellent computer skills which includes using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices. Ability to learn and apply computer related applications and programs. Computer applications and programs include, but not limited to, Laboratory application systems such as Sunquest and Microsoft office programs such as Outlook
Mature judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within AdventHealth guidelines and applicable regulations
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
Completion of Blood Collection Program, Medical Lab Assistant Program, or similar training program appropriate to anticipated department assignment
1-year experience in hospital laboratory setting appropriate to department work assigned
Current student seeking higher educational degree or certification in a science field such as nursing, medical technology, pre-med, or related field may be substituted for the 1-year hospital experience
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
National Certification in Phlebotomy if phlebotomy duties are required
National Certification as a Medical Lab Assistant
The Phlebotomist perform various laboratory support procedures in assigned areas which may include phlebotomy and/or specimen processing in clinical and anatomical pathology areas. Performs any of the following non-technical functions under the supervision of the department supervisor, manager or director.
Specimen collection and transporting
Specimen processing; trouble shooting sample and order discrepancies
Submission and monitoring of specimens submitted to referral laboratories; shipping samples to reference laboratories or facilities for consult; entering billing information
Perform equipment maintenance procedures
Blood component preparation and issuance
Receiving and inoculation of culture media
Accession surgical cases requiring knowledge of anatomy; trouble shoot and escalate any missing surgical specimens; assign and distribute slides to pathologists
Inventory and ordering of supplies
Works customarily involves practical knowledge in various laboratory procedures and support functions in pre-analytical and post-analytical tasks. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
