Vanderbilt University Medical Center Post-Graduate Year One (PGY1) and Post-Graduate Year Two (PGY2) Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency program is a PGY1 & PGY2 combined 24-month, full-time residency, accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency program. The purpose of the PGY2 portion of the residency is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
The mission of the first year of the program is to meet all of the requirements of a traditional PGY1 Pharmacy residency program, including development of a core skill set in drug information and literature evaluation, pharmacotherapy evaluation and management, project based research and team functioning, pharmacy operations, presentation development and delivery, and direct patient interaction. The PGY1 year is then followed by a PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency that builds upon PGY1 residency graduates' competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.
Our two-year residency program will provide each resident with specific learning experiences designed to enable the resident to expand the scope of his/her practice skills. The resident will be evaluated on ASHP goals/objectives as assigned on various learning experiences (rotations, longitudinal experiences, presentations, etc.) throughout the year. The ASHP Residency Learning System and PharmAcademic is used extensively, which offers the resident a tailored, personalized, and progressive learning experience throughout the year. Residents have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and assist preceptors with teaching pharmacy students from the local colleges of pharmacy. An optional teaching certificate provided by one of the two local colleges of pharmacy may be obtained during the residency. The resident will also gain experience in giving formal presentations, including research pharmacy projects that are designed to improve patient care quality and safety throughout the year. The second year (PGY2) of this two-year program will concentrate on developing management and leadership skills necessary to lead teams and departments, as well as development of new programs.
This residency will tentatively begin on June 21, 2021. VUMC pharmacy residency positions beginning in 2021 for postgraduate year one (PGY1) residency programs are offered to applicants through the ASHP Resident Matching Program (the "Match"). The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is responsible for establishing the Rules of the Match, and for monitoring the implementation of the Match. The administration and conduct of the Match is carried out by National Matching Services Inc. on behalf of ASHP.
A broad range of experiences are incorporated into the residency curriculum. Required PGY1 rotation experiences include internal medicine, two critical care medicine and two administrative rotations, with a variety of elective rotations available, including cardiology, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, informatics, medication safety, oncology, pediatrics, solid organ transplantation, and others. PGY1 resident must spend two thirds or more of the program in direct patient care activities. Required PGY2 rotation experiences include business operations, clinical management, health-system administration, inpatient operations, medication safety, pharmacy value optimization, practice management (midyear/project) and quality and compliance rotations, with a variety of elective rotations available as well. Staffing requirements vary but the resident will gain extensive experience in pharmacy operations, including but not limited to the sterile products area, central dispensing area, satellite dispensing areas, narcotic room procedures, and assisting with clinical dashboard monitoring, clinical pharmacy coverage and consults.
Position Qualifications (Required):
Applicants must submit their application in the PhORCAS application portal by December 31 st and complete an online application with Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the PGY1 Pharmacy & PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency. A CV, Letter of Intent, three letters of recommendation, and University transcripts for pharmacy coursework are required to be submitted through applicants PhORCAS application.
Applicants will be required to be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and must obtain unrestricted licensure to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Tennessee by July 31 st of their residency year. Residents who are not fully licensed by this date will have modifications to their scheduled responsibilities. Failure to obtain Tennessee licensure by October 1 st will result in dismissal from the residency program and termination from employment at VUMC. Verification of professional degree conferred, as well as Tennessee Pharmacist licensure occurs in accordance with VUMC policy.

VUMC will conduct pre-employment background checks on all final candidates for all positions in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws. The background check process will begin after a contingent offer of employment is made and accepted by the selected/matched residency candidate. Pharmacy employees and candidates who are conditionally offered employment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center will also be tested for compliance with alcohol and drug use in accordance with VUMC policy.
