Summary

The Medication Safety Specialist serves as a subject matter expert regarding safety and improvement science. This position supports quality and safety initiatives designed to improve outcomes and reduce the risk of harm from pharmacological agents and medication related processes. Through the advocation of error reduction and the promotion of high reliability practices, the Medication Safety Coordinator will lead the development of regular statistical reports, analyze trends, report outcomes, facilitate quality teams, and chair workgroups. This person will work closely with Cook Children’s staff, physicians, and leaders along with numerous internal and external multidisciplinary improvement projects which may include SPS, NSQIP, CHA, CHAT, Opioid Stewardship and other collaboratives as indicated. 

Qualifications:

  • Advanced clinical, leadership, safety or quality improvement training.
  • Postgraduate year one or two residency (pediatrics or health-system pharmacy) or 5 + years of experience in clinical practices with demonstrable clinical and leadership skills.
  • Prior pediatric hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to work with all members of the health care team to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Must be able to adapt to changing healthcare environment and requirements.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification:

  • Registered pharmacist with Texas licensure (or eligible - must be obtained within 90 days of employment).
  • Quality or Patient Safety Certification within 3 years of date of hire.
