You Will Be Responsible For:
The Lactation Consultant is responsible to the BirthCare Center/Educator /Director to provide educational programming and clinical expertise that promotes and supports breastfeeding. The Lactation Consultant will assure the delivery of safe and effective patient care of the lactating mother and her infant as defined by Florida Hospital East Region’s standards of nursing care and is consistent with other related disciplines.
Assesses patient knowledge of breastfeeding.
Assesses effectiveness of newborn breastfeeding behaviors and teaches these assessment skills to the mother.
Assesses psychosocial factors that affect lactation and the childbearing family.
Prepares an appropriate plan of care for the breastfeeding mother and infant.
Communicates the plan of care to the mother and her partner as applicable.
Communicates the plan of care to the nursing staff responsible for primary care.
Prepares appropriate plan of care for the newborn and/or mother with special needs
Implements appropriate plan of care to assure optimal newborn nutrition.
Communicates with patients and families in a supportive, responsive and non-judgmental manner.
Facilitates accurate and timely communication with the RN.
Evaluates the effectiveness of the breastfeeding relationship.
Evaluates knowledge base of nursing staff.
Evaluates products, literature and equipment to be utilized by our clients.
Participates in the follow-up care of mothers and infants throughout phone calls, educational/support groups, and possible home health visits.
Promotes and participates in the hospital and departmental quality program.
Develops, implements and evaluates one quality improvement project annually that relates to patient outcome and lactation.
Provides a monthly report to the Educator clearly demonstrating activities and evaluating effectiveness of role.
Maintains clinical competency in lactation through reading, seminars, classes and conference attendance.
Individual continuing education file reflects ongoing education within specialty.
Flexes schedule to best meet patient needs and communicates accurately and in a timely manner to unit management and Director.
Maintains competency in all equipment utilized and in all aspects of care appropriate to role.
Assures current information in policies, procedures and protocols as they affect infant nutrition and the needs of the breastfeeding mother.
Assures teamwork and accomplishment of successful breastfeeding through effective communication with patients, staff and physicians.
Collaborates with perinatal educators, staff and administrative team of Women’s and Children’s Services to promote and coordinate services to the childbearing family.
Demonstrates collegiality, cooperation and respect to facilitate the flow of information and assure the accomplishment of hospital and departmental goals.
Adheres to standards of ethical practice, conduct and appearance as advocated by professional organizations.
Assesses need for staff education on an annual basis.
Provides in-service education for nursing staff.
Provides continuing education for all interested hospital staff as needed.
Provides individual educational opportunities for staff nurses in actual clinical situations.
Acts as an ongoing resource to staff nurses and empowers their efforts to care for the breastfeeding family.
Assists in the orientation of staff members as requested.
Promotes hospital and service goals through various educational marketing strategies.
Supports and is involved in organized community efforts to promote breastfeeding.
Develops course description, outline and evaluation tools for all educational programs related to infant nutrition and breastfeeding for inpatients and outpatients.
Assists the outpatient childbearing family by providing support, education and information regarding resources.
Assists in the orientation and education of nursing students.
What You Will Need:
Graduate of an accredited School.
Demonstrated expertise in the care of breastfeeding mothers, normal newborns, advocacy for breastfeeding and positive interpersonal relationships required.
IBCLC Certification is required.
Active BLS certification required.
