Join our unique, non-traditional team of experienced certified child life specialists, exclusively supporting well-children of seriously ill adult patients.
The Palliative Care Child Life Specialist (PC CLS) possesses a strong foundational skillset from traditional pediatric child life practice and utilizes an expansive knowledge of child development, and childhood trauma and grief education; to support adult patients with serious medical conditions, loved by children (ages 0-18). The PC CLS initiates developmentally-appropriate therapeutic interventions designed to assess and enhance children’s coping, promote understanding, address concerns, and prepare them for upcoming situations with their loved one. Provides education for adults and children via: disclosure and explanation of medical conditions, preparation for a death and/or bereavement support following a death, typical behavioral and emotional responses to stress and trauma, red flag behaviors, and childhood grief.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
Serving on adult Supportive & Palliative Care team, attending daily and/or weekly team meetings, as well as palliative care training.
Assessing psychosocial needs of children and families, prior to implementing therapeutic interventions.
Understanding and providing developmentally-appropriate explanations to children and involved adults including: diagnosis teaching, anticipatory grief, death, and grief after loss.
Implementing developmentally and situationally-appropriate bibliotherapy and therapeutic interventions to promote understanding, teach coping strategies, provide normalcy, and promoting expression of feelings.
Initiates legacy and memory-making activities; and advocates for children to have a choice to visit and/or say goodbye to their loved one.
Provides education for involved adults in regard to their children’s: healthy coping, common concerns, typical behavioral changes, and resources for additional community and professional support.
Actively participates in development of best practices, procedures and processes with the Palliative Care Child Life team.

Demonstrates communication skills including; developmentally-appropriate verbiage, facial expressions, active listening, emotional regulation, empathy, social awareness, relationship management, self-awareness, affective matching and presentation skills.
Possesses effective time-management and prioritization skills for all child life tasks and responsibilities, often while working independently or with minimal supervision.
Displays cultural competence with patients, families and medical staff with diverse spiritual, ethnic, language, educational and socio-economic differences.
Advocates for psychosocial well-being of children by: promoting open and honest communication, educating medical staff about the need for and importance of allowing children to make bedside visits on all units, providing opportunities for children to say goodbye, and inclusion during memorializing their loved one.
Manages the intense emotional stress inherent when working with children and families experiencing serious illness or injury, end-of-life, death and bereavement.
