UltrasoundJob Summary
Performs ultrasound (US) examinations as well as coordinates and monitors sonographers in their daily performance of such imaging studies. Reviews and prioritizes ordered US studies working with radiologists, other imaging sections within Radiology, and other hospital departments to ensure effective utilization of personnel and equipment. Reviews image quality of sonographers and provides ongoing counseling on how to improve image quality. Develops and maintains weekly staff work schedules. Ensures that US equipment is constantly functional and properly maintained for immediate use. Administers annual performance evaluations and prepares/administers necessary paperwork to address progressive counseling situations.
Essential Functions:
Performs US imaging studies using the appropriate scanning techniques and equipment; supervises sonographer workforce in their performance of such examinations. (15%)
Scans all relevant clinical information into the PACS, on a per study basis, assigns prioritization box for the radiologists' worklists, and then transmits current (and comparison images, when applicable) to the PACS. These activities must be completed immediately following examination completion, not to exceed 1 hour. (15%)
Effectively interacts with Denver Health's PACS system through compliance with data entry, image post-processing, image archiving tasks, image quality assurance, and other related user interface activities. (15%)
Uses Epic to input patient examination data and to place patient orders (as appropriate). Triages/resolves sonographer problem issues concerning Epic and the Radiology module entitled, "Radiant." (15%)
As the supervisor of the Ultrasound section, develops work schedules of his/her direct reports. Interviews new candidates for full/half-time sonographer positions as well as sonographer intermittent positions. Undertakes all necessary tasks to ensure the hire and termination of sonographers is in conformance with Denver Health's Human Resource policies and procedures. (0%)
Ensures that the sonographer workforce follows the appropriate patient care guidelines related to patient safety, comfort, and personal dignity as well as uses 2 patient identifiers at all times. Coordinates the transport of patients to and from the Department of Radiology, as needed, to prevent patient flow delays. (15%)
Reviews PACS Quality Control (PACS QC) reports related to quality assurance as well as Safety Intelligence (SI) reports. Counsels sonographers who are responsible for PACS QC incidents in terms of how to perform high quality images, use appropriate identifiers, and conform with relevant imaging protocols. In addition, investigates all reported SI incidents and submits results of these investigations to Imaging Manager for input into Denver Health's SI reporting system. (5%)
Schedules and coordinates the performance of US examinations with other departments of Denver Health to prevent conflicts that may lead to delayed or repeated examinations. (5%)
Provides opportunities for staff skill set development. (5%)
Oversees the US section's inventory management activities to include ordering, stocking, and performing inventory checks on medical supply par levels. (5%)
Assists with assessing potential budget variances (positive and negative). Reviews labor costs to ensure they remain in budget. (5%)
Education:
Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required
Work Experience:
1-3 years of experience performing ultrasound examinations. Required and
Some supervisory experience preferred.
Licenses:
BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
RDMS-Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required and
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Skill in exercising initiative, judgment and decision-making in solving problems and meeting organizational objectives.
Knowledge of supervisory theory and methods sufficient to be able to perform a variety of supervisory functions.
Knowledge of anatomy sufficient to be able to position patients and locate anatomical area to be imaged.
Skill in using equipment and instruments common to ultrasound technology.
Knowledge of how to perform US imaging studies that is sufficient enough to adequately train subordinate sonographers.
Appropriate skill sets in maintaining accurate records concerning US examinations.
Knowledge of inventory practices sufficient to be able to preempt stock shortages and to maintain adequate par levels.
