Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The New-to-Specialty RN role is specifically designed for experienced nurses with no previous nursing experience in adult ambulatory oncology. New-to-Specialty RNs receive specialized orientation support through the New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship program to assist in their transition to practice.

About the Apheresis Unit

As a hybrid clinical/laboratory unit, this skilled team serves both adult and pediatric patients, both inpatient and outpatient. In addition to caring for our patients, the nurses and medical assistants in this unit work with donors and contribute to Fred Hutch Cancer Center's groundbreaking immunotherapy research.

About the General Oncology Care Neighborhood

An innovative care model for patients receiving treatment for a wide range of cancers, our Care Neighborhoods use a unique model to put patients at the center of our work, while creating a better experience for patients, their families and our team members. The Care Neighborhoods bring all members of the care team (providers, nurses, medical assistants, and support staff) in one location to collaboratively care for the patient.

About the General Oncology Unit

Our general oncology nursing and medical assistant teams provide expert, specialized care for patients receiving assessment and treatment in a wide range of specialty areas, including women's health, sarcoma, GI, THN, GU, ENT, renal melanoma, skin, endocrine, surgical and Phase 1 Clinics. Working collaboratively, team members in this unit care for both medical and surgical oncology patients, while also coordinating care and supporting patients' families.

About Infusion Services Unit

The dedicated team members working in Infusion Services administer chemotherapy and biologic therapies to patients, but that's just the beginning. During treatment, the nurses and nursing and medical assistants in this unit help patients treat symptoms and side effects, stay hydrated, and manage pain, while also playing an important role in patient and family/caregiver education.

About the Procedure Suite

In our procedure suite, patients receive minimally invasive procedures aimed at screening for cancer, obtaining biopsies, diagnosing cancer or monitoring the progression of disease and treatment. Common procedures in this department include central line placements, endoscopy, bronchoscopies, bone marrow aspirations and lumbar punctures. The physicians, nurses, medical assistants and surgical techs working on this team take a collaborative approach, providing compassionate and consistent care-our primary nursing approach means each patient has the same nurse throughout their procedure.

About the Transplant Clinic

Our transplant clinic nursing and medical assistant teams provide specialized care for patients receiving assessment and treatment for blood and marrow transplant patients in three specialized areas: allogeneic, autologous and pediatric. Patients receiving care in the Transplant Clinic receive ongoing care over multiple months from a dedicated, multidisciplinary care team.

About the Pain Clinic

Fred Hutch Pain Clinic manages complex, cancer-related pain before, during, and after active treatment for a variety of cancer diagnoses. The goal of the clinic is to assist patients to improve their overall function and to allow patients to continue treatment while carrying on with as many of their daily routines and activities as possible. The Pain Clinic Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC) performs phone-based and in-person assessments, triages symptoms, provides patient education, reviews laboratory results, and performs prescription refills. As part of an interdisciplinary team, the CNC provides patient-centered care and balances pain management with patient safety.

About the Wellness Center

Fred Hutch Wellness Center supports all of our high-risk prevention and surveillance clinic. They are focused on caring for patients who are at high risk for developing cancers due to different factors. Our clinical nurse coordinators perform care coordination to all of our patients. They partner with our providers in creating surveillance plans and providing follow up and support to patients. It is a multi-disciplinary team who collaborate with each other daily to ensure the best patient care.

About the Proton Center

Proton therapy is an advanced radiation treatment that precisely targets tumors with a goal of limiting harm to healthy tissue, it may help reduce short- and long-term side effects, lower the risk of secondary tumors (caused by treatment) and improve your life during cancer treatment and after. Fewer than 100 centers worldwide offer this state-of-the-art treatment option. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center - Proton Therapy, led by world-class experts in proton therapy, is the only facility of its kind in the Northwest.

Responsibilities

Apheresis Nurse - About the role

As an apheresis nurse, you will:

• Perform apheresis procedures for patients and donors in all locations served
• Assess patient/donor medical history and clinical conditions
• Perform donor screenings and review documentation before collection
• Educate patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects, and symptom management
• Monitor patient/donor response to the procedure, making technical and medication changes as needed
• Call out potential and immediate clinical concerns to provider teams and directors
• Assist in policy and procedure development, review, revision, and implementation

You'll need to:

• Adhere to unit policies and procedures, including FDA, FACT, and CAP
• Accept rotating on-call assignments for nights, weekends, and holidays
• Accept rotating assignments for Charge Nurse
• Adhere to our mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy
• Have excellent critical thinking, time management, and communication skills

Clinical Nurse Coordinator - About the role

As a clinical nurse coordinator, you will:

• Develop and coordinate care plans for patients
• Act as the primary point of contact for patients in your unit
• Manage prescription refills, prior authorizations, and home health
• Monitor patient response to therapies in collaboration with multidisciplinary care team
• Assess and manage ongoing physical, emotional and social needs of patients
• Assist with minor in-clinic procedures as needed
• Coordinate patient and family/caregiver education
• Triage patients in person, via phone and online
• Have the opportunity to participate in educational events and special projects

You'll need to:

• Attend regular team meetings with provider and nursing teams
• Work collaboratively with team members in support services
• Adhere to our mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy
• Have excellent critical thinking, time management, and communication skills.

Infusion Nurse - About the role

As an infusion nurse, you will:

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments on patients receiving treatment, including reviewing lab results
• Develop a care plan based on each patient's disease, symptoms and response to treatment
• Administer IV hydration, electrolyte replacement, chemotherapy/biotherapy and blood products
• Educate patients, families and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects and symptom management
• Coordinate with team members across the organization to ensure continuity of care
• Refer patients, families and caregivers to resources and support services

You'll need to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of standard treatment and medication side effects
• Follow all procedures regarding safe disposal of chemotherapy agents, blood products and other hazardous materials
• Participate in continuing education, departmental projects, committee work and qualify improvement initiatives
• Adhere to our mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy

Procedure/Suite Nurse - About the role

As a procedure/suite nurse, you will:

• Perform a nursing assessment prior to each patient's sedation and procedure, including a review of risk factors, health history and relevant lab studies
• Administer sedating agents and initiate intravenous access
• Monitor and assess airway and level of consciousness during procedures
• Document all nursing care and drug delivery activities in an accurate and timely fashion
• Provide support to patients and families, including post-procedure care
• Respond to emergency or urgent medical situations in the clinic

You'll need to:

• Follow all procedures related to sedation and reversal agents
• Inform charge nurse or nurse supervisor of high-risk situations or operational issues
• Pursue continuing education and participate in conferences and professional organizations
• Adhere to our mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy
• Assesses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs and evaluates patients' adaptation to health changes
• Develops a plan of care based on patients' disease, symptoms, and response to treatment
• Educates patients, families, and caregivers on disease processes, treatment, side effects and symptom management
• Coordinates with inter-disciplinary team to ensure continuity of care
• Refers patients, families and caregivers as appropriate to other clinical resources/professionals such as social work, home health care, clinical nutrition, etc.
• Implements, evaluates and modifies plan of care
• Integrates research and evidence based knowledge into clinical practice

In addition to primary responsibilities listed in job description, the New-to-Specialty RN will have the following key responsibilities:

• Performs comprehensive nursing assessment of general oncology, immunotherapy, and/or blood and marrow transplant patients as pertinent to the specific clinical position, which includes review of relevant lab studies, review of systems, and assessment of pain, distress and other symptoms.
• Operates unit-specific processes and equipment as outlined in defined clinical practice standards and competencies.
• Works with a wide range of staff as part of an interdisciplinary team including physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and ancillary staff.
• Provides care adapted to individual patient needs based on policies/procedures and guidelines.
• Consults, collaborates with, and participates in patient care with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare team members, and implements clinical practice according to institutional standards.
• Engages in New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship clinical curriculum and competency development which support the clinical functions and duties pertinent to the specific clinical department and the organization.
• Participates in weekly self-reflections and meetings with the New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship team to facilitate reflective practice.
• Maintains open communication with supervisor, preceptors, and New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship team regarding challenges or concerns during the New-to-Specialty RN Fellowship program.

Qualifications

Required:

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
• Current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license or NLC multistate license.
• Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
• Additional certification may be required dependent upon department.
• Critical thinking skills which promote best outcomes of patients and staff in a complex setting
• Ability to exercise clinical judgment in patient care scenarios
• Ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently
• Communication skills in articulation, listening, and dealing with conflict
• Ability to organize care with attention to safety and quality, specific to individual patient needs across the care continuum.

Preferred:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• 2+ years of nursing experience working closely with interdisciplinary team members in the complex care of patients

The hourly pay range for this position is from $45.35 to $84.80 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Registered Nurses are paid on a step-scale basis and are also eligible for shift differentials and other pay premiums such as advanced degree, preceptor and certification.
